Did You Know?
I found the information on this video was very interesting. This video shows us just how important it is to be technologically literate. The top ten in-demand jobs in 2010 did not even exist in 2004. The amount of technical information is doubling every year. So, the students that are starting a four year technical degree will have half outdated information by their third year of study.
Technology can also harm us if we use it too much though. The 25% of India's population with the highest IQ's is greater than the total population in the United States. What does that say about our education in the United States? Or is it just because children and teenagers spend too much time "playing" with technology instead of using it to benefit them?
Mr. Winkle Wakes
Mr. Winkle is an old man who is gloomy about all the new machines and technology that he missed over the period of his hundred-year nap. This video points out that anything can be taught over a computer and students do need to learn about technology because it is increasing day by day. We, as educators, should teach our kids the old-fashioned way -- by lecturing and giving paper work -- but we should also teach our kids about the technology that is out there and how it can help them.
Ken Robinson
Ken Robinson points out in his video that education kills creativity. He says that kids are creative because they are not afraid of being wrong. As we educate them over the years, they learn more and more and are afraid of being wrong so they do not say what they think. How can we be creative if we are scared to try something new? He tells a story of a girl who was always fidgeting in class and the teachers thought that something was wrong with her and she needed medicine. Her parents took her to the doctor and he said that nothing was wrong with her, she was just a dancer. She needed to move around to be able to think and focus on something.
Cecelia Gault
I think that we definitely need to find out what Finland is doing to keep their drop out rate so low. Cecelia Gault says in her post that the drop out rate in Finland is less than 1%, but is 25% in the United States. We also need to find out what other schools around the world are doing to keep the IQ's of their students so high. The United States school system has a lot of changing and catching up to do.
Digital Smarts
I think Vicki Davis came up with a great idea with teaching students through technology and letting them teach each other. It gives them something fun to do and teaches them through current trends. One student mentions that she enjoyed one certain project that she got to work on with other students from all around the world. The students seem to enjoy learning more when they can relate it to everyday life, such as blogging and making videos.
"Technology can also harm us if we use it too much though." Where did this come from? How so?
ReplyDelete"What does that say about our education in the United States? Or is it just because children and teenagers spend too much time "playing" with technology instead of using it to benefit them?" No. It says that India's population is more than 4 times the size of the U.S. population.
"This video points out that anything can be taught over a computer" Where in the video is this claim made?
"We, as educators, should teach our kids the old-fashioned way -- by lecturing and giving paper work " Why?
"We also need to find out what other schools around the world are doing to keep the IQ's of their students so high." Are IQs subject to manipulation in this way?
"I think Vicki Davis came up with a great idea ..." It is not original to Vicki Davis.
You need to think about whether you are saying what you intend to say.
First off, I haven't read Dr. Strange's comment, so excuse me if I repeat some of the same things.
ReplyDeleteTechnology can also harm us if we use it too much though. How is technology harming us?
The 25% of India's population with the highest IQ's is greater than the total population in the United States. What does that say about our education in the United States? Or is it just because children and teenagers spend too much time "playing" with technology instead of using it to benefit them? I don't know. What DOES it say about our education in the U.S.? I'm not quite sure how your statement about "playing" with technology relates or even where you got it from?
This video points out that anything can be taught over a computer and students do need to learn about technology because it is increasing day by day. I think you may have missed the point.
Ken Robinson points out in his video that education kills creativity. Hence the name of the video :)
As we educate them over the years, they learn more and more and are afraid of being wrong so they do not say what they think. I don't think Sir Ken Robinson believes that an education correlates with a lack of creativity. It's not one or the other. How will you foster both in your classroom. Is one more important than the other? Is either important?
We also need to find out what other schools around the world are doing to keep the IQ's of their students so high. What do you think?
I think Vicki Davis came up with a great idea with teaching students through technology and letting them teach each other. Actually, a lot of teachers have adapted this teaching method. Davis isn't the first. But you're correct in that it's a good concept!
I'm sorry if this is comment off as a little abrupt. You just have to be sure you say what you mean and mean what you say! And it's also okay to disagree. We just want to know your HONEST opinion! :)
I'm looking forward to your response to this!

I really loved your user friendly blog! I also liked the fact that your post contained important facts and statements made. I agree with your ideas and questions on technology and creativity. One of the things I noticed was to be more specific and elaborate more on the topics. Also,to make sure your sentences in your paragraph flow together. Other than that your post was good! I totally agree with the fact the United States has a lot of changing and catching up to do. I really enjoyed reading your post and viewing your post!

I believe that we should still teach the old-fashioned way because some students learn better with hands-on experiences of by lecturing. Not all students can learn by only using technology.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, technology is harming us in some ways because we use it to play around and waste time. Think about how many Facebook updates there are every day and how many people spend hours upon hours browsing Facebook or YouTube when they could be doing something productive like doing homework or studying. Then they complain because they "didn't have time to finish their homework".
I also believe that education and creativity are equally important. I, personally, am lacking in creativity because I have always been shy and afraid of being wrong or ridiculed for my thoughts and ideas. The older I got and more education I got, the more my creativity slipped away.
Thank you all for the comments and tips.
